What You’ll Need
To make this after sun balm, gather the following tools and ingredients:
Tools:
- Double boiler or a heat-safe bowl over a pot of water (if you don’t have either of these you can use a pan – just keep the heat low!)
- Spoon or stirring stick
- Small tin or jar with lid
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp almond oil – light and moisturizing, full of vitamin E
- 1 tbsp coconut oil – soothing and antibacterial
- 1 tbsp shea butter – deeply nourishing, great for sun-damaged skin
- 1 tbsp beeswax pellets – gives the balm its creamy texture and locks in moisture
- 5–8 drops essential oils – optional, but calming ones like lavender or chamomile work beautifully
How to Make It
Step 1: Melt the base
In your double boiler or heat-safe bowl, gently melt the beeswax, coconut oil, almond oil, and shea butter over low heat. Stir slowly until everything is fully combined and melted.
Step 2: Cool slightly and add oils
Take the mixture off the heat and let it cool for a minute or so. Then stir in your essential oils. I usually go for lavender, chamomile, or calendula—anything gentle and soothing that you like the smell of.
Step 3: Pour and set
Pour your melted balm into a clean tin or jar. Let it sit at room temperature until it firms up. That’s it!
Final Product
It might be one of the simplest things you’ll ever make, but it seriously helps heaps. I use it all the time: after a long day in the sun, if my face is wind-burned from sailing or dinghy rides, we even used it when we went to the snow (I actually don’t know what we would’ve done without it that time).
Heads up: it’s a little oily, especially if you use it right before bed. Just something to keep in mind—I’ve had to wash my pillowcase a bit more often.
I hope you enjoy this balm as much as I do! Let me know in the comments – I’d love to hear how it turned out for you.
