Hey everyone, and welcome to Sailing Sister!
My name is Bella, and I’m a teen living on the ocean with my family, I love to surf, kite, dive and sail. I’ve always been passionate about inspiring others to get out there and adventure, and decided to start this blog to share my knowledge and experiences (so far!) with others, and hopefully help all of you in the process!
On this blog, you can expect to find posts about epic surf, kite, and dive spots, my favourite islands, recipes and rules we use on board, and just what life is like living out here. I hope to provide you with inspiration to get after your own dreams and make the most of where you are!
I’m so excited to start this journey with you all! Please feel free to leave comments and share your thoughts on my posts. Have fun everyone!
The Journey So Far!
We are currently in the Mentawais, Indonesia, but this is where we’ve been!
We started on Happy Days, our 46ft Leopard catamaran, where we bought her in Puerto Penasco, Mexico, which is right up the top of the Sea Of Cortez. Once onboard we made our way down the Baja Peninsula and after enjoying La Paz crossed over to the mainland where we scored some surf before checking-out of the country and heading to Costa Rica.
We spent Christmas there with my uncle and his family who are living there, then, with our grandparents on board, we continued to Panama where we transited the Canal and found our selves in the Atlantic for the first time! Our grandparents headed home while we explored the Atlantic side of Panama which we learned was really under rated and we really enjoyed it.
Soon it was time to move on and we sailed up to the Cook Islands where we stayed and waited a few days for the weather to be good and then made our way to the East coast of Mexico making landfall at Isla Mujeres.
We had a great time there before moving on and heading to the USA, we checked-in to Miami and were totally overwhelmed with the amount of people and the culture. As we made our way up the East coast we found our favourite spots were Rhode Island, New York, and probably Maine where we enjoyed the more remote islands but also had to dodge hundreds of lobster pots!
We then went up to Canada for the rest of hurricane season and loved it there with it’s super friendly people, surfing, kiting and skating. Oh, and we were there in summer so there were really long days and we found ourselves going to bed at 10pm! As we were getting ready to make our way south again we found that we were either going to have to run back to the USA or stay and attempt to ride out a hurricane… we decided to send it on a four day passage to New Bedford and managed to make it safely without too much drama.
Now back on the East coast we made our way back down a bit quicker than the way up and soon had made it to West Palm Beach where we did a few final things before heading over the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas. We loved it there and met some super cool crew on other boats that we spent Christmas with.
And then we were off again and went back down t Panama, completing an Atlantic loop of sorts. We spent another month or so surfing in Bocas del Toro and then prepped Happy Days to cross the Pacific by hauling out and doing some boat work including the anti-foul and sail-drives. Then we were transiting and after staying a night in Gatun Lake we were suddenly back in the Pacific again! We stocked up on heaps of food in Panama City, watching the weather really close, we loved it there though and really enjoyed the city.
Soon enough we were saying goodbye to land and wouldn’t see it again for a whole 25 days! The Pacific Crossing was a pretty good one with few dramas and not too many storms. We made landfall on the 25th night and could literally taste the air it was so thick with the beautiful smell of French Polynesia!
The Marquesas were beautiful and we feasted on baguettes and climbed the amazing mountains… then moved on to explore the tuamotus and actually seriously scored some waves there that were totally un-expected. We then continued to Tahiti and the Societies, which were by far our favourite with the Marquesas mountains and the Tuamotus beautiful diving, throw in the amazing barrels and it was dreamy!
Unfortunately our three month visas were soon up and we set our eyes on Fiji, making stops in the Cook Islands where we chased Dogtooth Tuna and then sailed on to American Samoa and waited for the right weather there and went for rides on the funny buses that everyone gets around in there. Moving on we arrived in Fiji and there was definitely a sense of familiarity after being here for 8 months on our old vessel. We did the Musket Cove regatta and got in some good surf and kite session there at all the surrounding reefs. Then we realised we were almost too late to continue on for Vanuatu and quickly checked-out and headed across to Port Villa.
We only spent a few weeks there in Vanuatu before making our way to the Solomon Islands, which was a surprisingly tough passage and we nearly ran over a whale! We arrived and only spent four days ion the Solomons but the culture was really unique and we were both intrigued and totally grossed out by the beetle-nut they chewed on everywhere.
Then we continued on for Papua New Guinea where we stopped only once in a cool little spot called Kaveing… and only for a few days again.
We were off to the Ninigo Islands and then towards our goal of Indonesia!
After some slower days on passage we made land fall in Indo at Biak and were amazed at the crazy new culture there, after a week or so we were ready to hop our way around to Sorong and then on to Raja Ampat, we could only move during the day because of the danger of logs. Raja Ampat was beautiful and to wake up and find yourself there was crazy!
Continuing on we went down past Ambon, it was very remote around there and the locals hadn’t seen many tourists, we went pretty quick through there and landed in a spot called Labuan Badjo that we’d nicknamed ‘Cheese Town’ as it was the first place since Sorong where we could get some more specialty items like dairy and meat.
And then we were making our way to Lombok, stopping at Sumbawa to swim with the whale sharks which was an awesome experience! And then finally we’d made it to Lombok and stopped moving for the first time in two months… it felt amazing and Lombok was beautiful! We spent Christmas in a spot called Gerupuk where there were waves, a couple of other boats, and a cafe within motor bike distance!
We went back around to Marina del Rey where we left Happy Days for a month and flew to Aus and Nz to visit family for the first time in a while.
When we got back we stayed in Gili Air for a few weeks which we loved and even scored an epic swell there as well. Then we headed across to Nusa Lembongan where we spent a couple of weeks and scored even more waves and enjoyed some amazing weather.
After that we went to Bali and embraced the hustle and bustle of the island for a bit before continuing on once again, sailing four days past the whole of Java and ending up in the hidden gem or Panaitan Island where we got to stay for around a week and surfed our faces off everyday! We loved it!
Having to stock up on some food again we ducked into Java for a couple of days, stocked up, and then went back out. Oh, and we stopped at the famous Krakatoa volcano…
We then went up to the Mentawais and bypassed Thunders to hit Roxies – a friendly ease in to the epic-ness that is the Ments!
Now we’ve been slowly making our way up the island chain, doing work, school, and surfing almost everyday…
And so, follow along as we continue the journey!
